Senior & Teen Photography FAQ

Planning a senior or teen photoshoot is a big deal - and I want you to feel excited, not overwhelmed! Below are the questions I hear most from parents and teens as they get ready to book. If you don't see your question here, reach out - I'd love to chat!

Getting to Know You / Booking Basics

Q: What makes your senior/teen sessions different from a typical photographer?

A: My sessions are built around getting to know your teen — through styling, prep, and one-on-one guidance — so they walk into the shoot feeling seen and confident, not just posed. You'll get a curated style rack, locations chosen around what they're wearing and where they feel most themselves, and true collaboration instead of a formula. Hair and makeup is available too (most teens skip it, but it's a fun treat if they want it!). What I hear most from parents is how *authentic* the images feel — that's the whole point. A portrait should look like your kid, not just a nice photo of a stranger.

Q: How far in advance should we book?

A: recommend booking at least 3 weeks out. Styling happens about 2 weeks before your session, so that gap gives you time to shop if needed — and I'm always happy to text back and forth about outfit ideas while you're out shopping! Many families book a month or more ahead just for breathing room to plan.

Q: Do you travel outside Aliso Viejo / Orange County?

A: I do travel occasionally, but it's actually more common for families to travel to *me*! I've photographed seniors from all over the country who come for Southern California's beaches, wildflowers, and iconic locations — often timed around college tours (UC Irvine, Soka, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach) or family trips to Newport and Laguna Beach. Just tell me you're coming, and I'll handle the planning.

Q: What's the first step if we want to book with you?

A: Reach out through my contact form or give me a call — no bots, I promise, it's really me! I recommend starting with a free Zoom or FaceTime consultation so we can meet and get you inspired. From there, I'll send a link to pick your date and lock it in with a simple online payment.

The Experience Itself

Q: What actually happens during a session — walk us through it?

A: Session day is my favorite! Here's what a typical Gold or Platinum session looks like: you'll arrive to outfits already steamed, accessorized, and organized by location. If you booked hair and makeup, that's first — and we'll double-check you love the look before we start (little tweaks like lip color are easy to adjust). Then we load up snacks, water, and gear and head to our first location together. By this point you've already met me at your consultation and styling appointment, so nerves usually turn into excitement. I'll guide you through posing, movement, and lighting at every stop, always checking in to make sure you're comfortable — you'll never be asked to wear or do anything you don't want to. We usually wrap around sunset, and by the end you'll be tired but so happy — it's hard work, but the good kind.

Q: How do you get to know my teen before the shoot?

A: It starts with your styling appointment! I send your teen a style form (parents get their own, too) before we meet. That appointment takes about 90–120 minutes and doubles as our getting-to-know-you time — we try on outfits, talk through ideas, and I get a feel for what makes your teen comfortable. It never feels like an interview; it just happens naturally.

Q: What if my teen is shy or camera-shy?

A: I work with camera-shy teens all the time! I send bite-sized posing guides ahead of the session so they can practice and find poses they actually like. Honestly, once they see how silly I can be and get through that first outfit, most teens relax fast. If it helps, they're also welcome to bring a sibling or close friend instead of a parent.

Q: Do you help with outfits and styling?

A: Yes — styling is one of my favorite parts! Whether it's a quick virtual styling call for a one-hour session or an in-person appointment with the full style rack for a Signature Session, I'll help make sure everything fits and feels right (I'll even do small temporary alterations if needed). Some teens prefer to style from their own closet, and that's great too — the goal is always for them to feel good in what they're wearing, because that confidence shows up in the photos.

Q: How many locations/outfit changes do we get?

A: Outside of the one-hour session (one location, about two outfits), locations and outfits are unlimited — though in practice it comes down to time and how many changes your teen can comfortably handle. For Gold Experience sessions and up, we typically hit 2–4 versatile locations, often getting a couple of outfits at each one.

Q: How long does a session take?

A: Wildcard — 1 hour

     Gold Experience — 2 hours

Platinum Experience (most popular) — 4 hours

     Icon Experience — 1 to 3 days

(Hair and makeup time is separate and not included in these numbers.)

Q: Can my session be any time of day?

A: Yes — I've got 30+ years of experience shooting in every kind of light, and I bring professional lighting gear to every session. My personal favorite is late afternoon into sunset; that golden hour light is unbeatable, and it also gives your teen time to build confidence as we go.

Q: Can I bring my pet to my session?

A: Definitely — I've photographed dogs, horses, even a cat once! We usually arrange for a family member to bring the pet to one pet-friendly location so it's just a quick pop-in, which also keeps shedding away from the outfits in the car.

For the Parents

Q: Will you help my teen still look like themselves, not overly posed or fake?

A: Yes — natural is my whole thing. Posing guidance happens organically throughout the session, based on what your teen is comfortable with. Even if they don't practice ahead of time, I'll guide them through everything in the moment. Retouching afterward is based on your preferences too.

Q: Can parents come to the session?

A: Of course! Most sessions have at least one parent there, and it's genuinely fun. That said, some teens do better without a parent watching — you know your kid best, so feel free to send a best friend along instead if that's a better fit.

Q: What kind of products/prints do you offer, and what's the investment?

A: We offer digital collections with print release, archival-quality prints, albums, and wall art. Sessions start at $525 and include a product credit toward anything you choose to purchase, with product packages starting at $520 — matching digital images are included with any product purchase. We'll go over full pricing at your styling appointment, and you'll get everything in writing to think over before reveal day.

Q: How long until we see/get our images?

A: Most galleries are ready about 3 weeks after your session. Reveals are guided — either in-studio, at your home, or over Zoom — and start with a set-to-music video of your gallery before we go through the images together and narrow down favorites (usually from 80+ images for a Signature session). Digital images are delivered within a couple weeks of ordering; products typically take 3–8 weeks depending on what's ordered. A few images are fully retouched and ready to go with you on the day of your reveal!

For Actors / Headshots Specifically

Q: Do you offer headshots as an alternative to driving to LA?

A: Yes! Headshot and audition sessions are done right here in Orange County with my associate photographer, Frank Carrino (also 30+ years of experience), and I help with styling and guidance. We shoot in a rented studio space in Costa Mesa, with daytime and evening appointments available — so no one loses a full day of school or work driving to LA.

Q: What's different about your headshot sessions vs. senior sessions?

A: Senior sessions are all about who your teen is right now. Headshot sessions are about the roles they could play — what their acting agent needs for auditions. Since studios often cast older teens in younger roles, we usually lean into younger-looking options, but ultimately your teen's agent guides what's needed. Audition headshots call for minimal, natural makeup and no retouching; branding headshots (for promo materials, IMDb, playbills) are a bit more polished and often include 3/4-length shots. We have a full FAQ just for headshots at OCtalentheadshots.com.

Logistics

Q: What should we wear / bring?

A: After your styling appointment, I'll send you home with a suggested packing list along with a day-before checklist we build together — tailored to whatever outfits and locations are chosen.

Q: What if it rains or weather doesn't cooperate?

A: Rare here in Southern California, but if weather (or illness) does interfere, we can move to an indoor/covered location or reschedule for the next open date. Note: if hair/makeup was booked for the original date, that artist's fee may still apply since they're a separate business and can't always fill a last-minute cancellation. I only take a limited number of clients each school year, so finding a new date for your teen is usually easy.

Q: Do you photograph teens outside of "senior year" (e.g., younger teens, non-seniors)?

A: Absolutely — I love working with everyone! Alongside seniors, I photograph families, tweens, sassy 15s, sweet 16s, even couples and pets. Seniors and teens will always be my passion, though.
